Robotech: Battle Cry
Ah, Robotech. Actually, robotech was my first exposure to the anime style. As children, Notwhole and I would call a local TV station that played it when they replaced it with Infomercials. I don't think that Station exists anymore...

  • Graphics: 8 for 10
  • Music: 7 for 10
  • Game Play: 6 for 10
  • Difficulty: 7 for 10
  • Graphics: The Mechs looks stright from space, the levels look straight from the anime... Yep, another game that feels the enviroment was done in the last week. Kind of distracting from the missions when you get twisted in citys thinking "I KNOW I passed that blue building before!". Sorry man, but ALL the buildings look that way. The mechs, however cell shaded, work well for the anime/cartoonish feel for the game. But, unless you like the same 3 city/canyon/space settings you're in for a bit of a let down.

Music: You start the game and you hear the opening fan fare! Game and cartoon mesh right? Umm, that opening is the only time you'll be up good on music. Everything else is replayed over and over. On the bright side though, it gives you the millitary feel to you missions. So dispite hearing the same music over and over, you have a nice sensation from it. Besides, you can't usually hear it over your guns and missles anyway.

Game Play: The controls are wonderful. One button for your gun (that over heats, but never runs outta ammo), one for missles, and a special action button (pick up objects, fire decoy flare, go into sniper mode). The controls for your mech are done off a thumb stick. The trigger buttons give you sideways movement( walk left while looking forward and shooting). You can transform into any of the three modes by pressing a direction on the D-pad. Making going from Guardian Mode into Battloid mode as easy as changing gears on your car. However, you can never take full advantage of the capabilites shown in the Cartoon.

Difficulty: The Game is Mission based (as one would expect for a millitary action based game). If you fail a mission (which will happen the first few times you try) you can try it again or pick a diffrent mission to go on. The enimies can actually shoot and hit you like they really give a damn about killing you (unlike some other games). Their forces seem unending, about the time you're ready for the mission to be over, here comes the second wave. There's also no health or weapon power ups. So, you have to watch you health rather than look for repair packs. It makes sense (can't repair youself during battle) but sucks (can't repair yorself during battle).

The game follows the story of the first series. The story is done between missions in kinda slow progession using nicely done still frames. The Dual mode for you and your buddies is kinda neat, blowing the hell outta each other with giant robots. I thought it was friggin neat to snipe them right in the eyes.. err eye.

A few problems though. Dispite being able to fly, there seems to be an invisable force fields in every city and canyon that doesn't allow you to go up any farther then the tops of the building or canyon walls. Kinda makes the ability to fly kinda useless. However, its still a good game, lots of fun for a fan of the series and those who just like fighting aliens with giants robots. Pick it up, get some cheat codes and have fun.
